This is one of my most-loved adventures. We’ve done this trip a dozen times, and every time it’s just as epic (and chaotic) as the first — and it still holds up as the ultimate one-day Santa Cruz beach guide. Enjoy!

There’s No Beach Like It
There may be no more iconic beach in California than Santa Cruz Beach — and few seaside backdrops more instantly recognizable from movies and TV. But even if you’re not here to relive your favorite moments from the silver screen, Santa Cruz is the place for an unforgettable day in the sun.
Below you’ll find my over-the-top, jam-packed, snack-powered itinerary for squeezing every drop of fun out of a single day at the Santa Cruz Beach, Boardwalk, and Wharf — designed for parents and kids alike. Do it in a day, stretch it into a weekend, or cherry-pick your favorite bits for your own choose-your-own-adventure. However you slice it: you’re in for a good time.
What to Expect
Summer is prime time here — and with that comes the three H’s: heat, hordes, and hassle. Pack your patience, stick with my guide, and you’ll dodge the worst of the crowds and keep your sanity (mostly) intact.
Plan to stick close to Beach Street, where everything on this itinerary happens. If you’re staying overnight, book a hotel within walking distance — Santa Cruz has no shortage of seaside motels and cozy beach inns.
Day-trippers: aim for the main Boardwalk parking lot right across the street. It’s $20 on weekdays, $35 on weekends — and worth every penny for the convenience. Arrive early! There’s a shuttle from an offsite lot too if you miss a spot.
Rise and Shine

Start your day early — between 7–9 a.m. — to beat the crowds and score a good breakfast with a view. Coffee will run you $3–$5, banana pancakes about $17 (you’re paying for the ocean breeze, trust me). If you’re up for a short stroll or drive, some local gems off Beach Street include Aldo’s Harbor Restaurant and the Crow’s Nest by the harbor — both family faves. Itsy Bitsy loves watching boats and looking for seals while we caffeinate.
Let’s Hit the Beach

Aim to hit the sand by 9 a.m. — locals arrive early and stake out spots fast. If it’s foggy, don’t fret: it usually burns off by mid-morning. Early hours mean mild weather, so dig, splash, and soak it in before the sun cranks up.
Fat Mama Tip: Reapply that sunscreen, fog or no fog. Coastal haze won’t save you from UV rays — I learned this the crispy way. My rule: SPF 30? Reapply every 30 minutes. SPF 70? Every 70. Not perfect, but better than nothing.
Santa Cruz offers plenty of beaches, each with its own vibe. For the liveliest scene, stay right in front of the Boardwalk — yes, it’s the most crowded, but also the most fun. Want a quieter spot? Head to a cove along West Cliff or south of the harbor — just remember: parking gets tricky if you bounce around.
Beach Rules, Quick & Dirty
No fireworks, no glass, no nudity, no smoking or alcohol — even on July 4th.
Check the city’s website to see which beaches allow dogs, fire pits, or volleyball courts.
Be kind, pack out your trash, and leave the sand cleaner than you found it.
Change of Scenery: The Wharf

After a few hours of sand in every crevice, it’s time for lunch. The Santa Cruz Wharf is a quick walk from the beach and Boardwalk — no need to move your car. Bring your sandy towels and flip-flops; nobody minds.

Wander the Wharf to watch surfers dodge wipeouts, seals barking under the planks, and snap classic views back toward the Boardwalk. And yes, it’s safe — despite the brief pier mishap in December 2024. No major injuries, and repairs made it sturdier than ever.
Favorites? Stagnaro Bros. for fresh fish and sea views, Makai Island Kitchen for a breezy cocktail, or grab fish tacos from a walk-up window. Outdoor seating is fun — but watch the seagulls. They will mug you for fries.
Game Time: Neptune’s Kingdom & Casino Arcade

After lunch, duck into Neptune’s Kingdom or the Casino Arcade to beat the afternoon heat. Itsy Bitsy’s weakness? Skee-Ball, claw machines, and hoarding prize tickets. She loves the lights, sounds, and excitement of beating Big Papa at air hockey.
Pro Tip: Buy a Boardwalk card at a kiosk — it works for all arcade games, rides, and carnival booths, and it stores your prize tickets as points. No more paper tickets stuffed in wet pockets. Genius.
Inside Neptune’s Kingdom you’ll also find mini golf, laser tag, air hockey, and more. Oh, and did I mention the air conditioning? It’s the perfect break from the sun — and a solid bribe if your kid refuses to leave the beach.
The Boardwalk Lights Up
As evening falls, the Boardwalk turns into pure California magic — neon lights, salty air, laughter, and the hum of the wooden coaster rolling into the night.

If you’ve got thrill-seekers, skip topping up the Boardwalk card — just grab a wristband instead. Kids lose cards, they can’t lose a wristband. Ride the historic carousel, win yet another stuffed animal you don’t need, eat something deep-fried on a stick. That’s the Boardwalk dream.
Check the events calendar: summer brings free movies, concerts, cook-offs — totally worth timing your visit for something extra special.
One Last Moonlit Stroll

If you’ve still got gas in the tank, end your epic day with a sunset or moonlit stroll along West Cliff Drive. It’s a paved path with stunning ocean views all the way to Natural Bridges State Park. Just a heads-up: Santa Cruz has a visible unhoused community — be aware of your surroundings if you walk at night.
Itsy Bitsy loves star-gazing here and visiting the Surfing Museum at the Lighthouse during the day. It’s our favorite place to watch lunar eclipses and catch a quiet moment after the Boardwalk buzz.
Enjoy
So there you have it — my ultimate Santa Cruz beach day: Boardwalk thrills, Wharf eats, secret tips, and a bit of local sass. Tackle it all in one go, break it into mini trips, or steal the parts you love best — either way, it’s an experience your family will remember (and talk about) for years.
May your parking be easy, your sunscreen strong, and your snacks sand-free. Now go make your own travelful adventure.
